Smokers by John Byrne & Stephen Gardner
“This new video and sound installation marks the early 21st century banishment of smokers to the great outdoors. We in Ireland were pioneers of the prohibition of smoking from enclosed public spaces and here we are presented with a homage to those who have remained committed to the pursuit of the ritual…al fresco.”
I saw this in Project Arts Centre on Wednesday. Today is the last chance to see it, but if you’re in town it’s worth popping in.
After visiting a few galleries in Dublin and being pretty disappointed by some pretty dismal fare (particularly the lame painting show/Christmas sale up the road in TBGS), this video was just a breath of fresh air. It’s simple, it’s witty, it’s well shot, it’s well presented, the soundtrack is great and it’s fun.
